The Day I Said “No!”

It was the 08th of April, 2016!

I was chosen to be the Facilitator for a Change Management process training initiated by a vertical of my department. The head of the vertical sent a message through a colleague of mine that I would have to arrange the laptop for this training since his Mac Book would not synchronize with the projector.

I have a Chrome book so synchronizing my laptop to the projector was also out of the question. In normal circumstances, a laptop would have been requested from the Technology team and would have been used in the Boardroom.

No

These were not normal circumstances.

The International Leadership Team of my company was in town and the Board Room was requested from us for their use rendering us “roomless”.

We now had to consider and book an external venue much to everyone’s chagrin. Now at this external venue, synchronizing our laptop machines to the projector were considered a challenge.

However I had a different challenge. I was co-facilitating this training with the Head of the said vertical.

And considering it was his initiative, I couldn’t understand why the responsibility of arranging this machine fell on me. I could have understood if we were in different locations or he didn’t have a team!.

However, he was in the same location as I and had 3 team members compared to me who has none. I also had a challenge understanding why the message was conveyed to me indirectly.

Was I unapproachable? Or was this simply to establish hierarchy?!

I am always on the fence on whether I am a true millennial or not. I was born in December,1979 so this is always the confusion.

However, for the purposes of this blog let’s assume that I am a millennial. So how do millennials view hierarchy?

Image result for saying no at work

I was reading an article on this subject and it said,”While older generations view organizations in the context of hierarchy, millennials are more focused on collaborating and equality.” (http://teamstrength.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/10-Ways-Millennials-Are-Creating-The-Future-of-Work.pdf)

I frankly couldn’t agree more. We are both Vertical heads.

The vertical head in question and I. Though, he is older in age and experience to me.

Image result for saying no at work
Image courtesy | Concepts New Central

But that to me doesn’t mean a thing. I live in a country and belong to  a culture where elders are respected and revered but at the same time I don’t agree that age gives entitles you to a license to behave as you please.

And this was the space I was coming from. Why couldn’t he speak to me ,himslef  when clearly he needed my help and secondly who died and made him the boss of me?!

What gives him the right to tell me to do things for him and why does he feel hes entitled to my support? I couldn’t wrap my head around these questions.

Image result for saying no at work

He was clearly coming from a “command and control” mentality which I didn’t  appreciate. I didn’t arrange the laptop.

There were several reasons for it. The top most was that I didn’t want him to think that it was okay to treat me like a minion.

But from a realistic point of view this was his initiative so he must take full accountability. Why shift it onto someone else whilst he remained footloose and fancy free?

Also, I had a busy day. I am handling an important initiate of the organization which attracts a lot of attention from the senior management.

I was on that day in a meeting which was supposed to happen between my boss and the CEO the next day. My boss and I were both refining a presentation deck that we had to use for the CEO.

From 11:00 a.m to 02:25 p.m we refined the deck, followed by the meeting at 02:30 p.m. By the time we wrapped up it was 05:00 p.m. Both my boss were hungry and tired.

Image result for saying no at work

At such a time I came back to my desk to a screenplay of pings with underpinnings of sweet manipulations. Things like I will cover this and you can cover that.

All set for tomorrow and such inquiries. I knew that this was leading to the laptop arrangement piece and got busy with more important things.

As I was preparing to leave, he ran behind me and caught me and asked me whether the laptop had been arranged. I said no.

Image result for saying no at work

He says, I had “conveyed” that it needs to be arranged and that he didn’t know that he had to come and talk to me in person to get it down. And didn’t I get the message?

I said I got the message alright but didn’t pay much attention to it as I had my own things to do. His body language signaled that he was angry and was expecting me to do it now.

I informed him that I had an Uber waiting and had to get home. He tried to convince me but as I gave solutions to problems it was clear that I was not going to risk missing my Uber for this laptop arrangement.

Image result for saying no at work

He turned around and walked off in a huff. I thought this was extremely professional.

I proceeded to my Uber and was on the way home. I tend to dial in my folks at home on the way home and was deep in conversation with my dad when I saw a call coming in from him.

I ignored the first one but when it rang again I took the call. There was livid vertical head on the other side informing me that he was upset hat I had not arranged the laptop.

Image result for saying no at work

And  that he couldn’t understand why such a big deal had been made in it. To which I responded that I wasn’t aware that I was responsible for logistics when clearly he had a team.

He said his team wasn’t responsible and that it was being done at all other locations by my counterparts and hence it was expected that I do it as well. I disagreed and pointed out that they did it ‘coz his team nor he was there. What was his excuse here?

He ranted on about how uncollaborative and unsupportive I was being. And I made half hearted attempts to defend myself and let her blow steam.

Image result for saying no at work

At the end of it, he did run out of steam and hung up on me. Another portrayal of unprofessional behavior.

Mind you we are equals as far as roles are concerned. We have no reporting relationship with each other and in fact report to the same person.

The only place where there is a superiority at play is his age and experience. And I think hes the only one who thinks too much of it.

Image result for saying no at work

Having said this I must point out that I did report to him once upon a time, but now due to a strange twist of fate, we are peers. So was he stuck in a time warp where he thought that I was the same person that I was when I was reporting into him?

A lot has changed over the years, my responsibilities as well as my role.

Under him I was diminished to arranging space for training whereas today I handle one of the most important initiatives for the organization. My time is important and valuable. At that moment I was also going through a lot personally having been recently , married, moved to a new city, a new job, a horrible boss and insufferable in laws.

Image result for saying no at work

As my manager he never once inquired how things were in my personal life. And frankly I am not the types to leverage on the sympathy.

My head space was different at that time. It’s 3 and half years later now and my head space is completely different.

But perhaps hes not been able to move on or accept this change. I guess its an impression hes made about me?

Image result for saying no at work

He does seem to think he’s the cats whiskers and that everyone is below him. Anyway the next day dawned on us and I was wondering how the training will go.

I always ensure I am at the venue before time and reached 40 minutes before the scheduled time here as well. He had already set up the laptop and the sound system.

The Mac book was plugged in! I don’t know if there was remorse for his behavior from the previous evening but boy was there over compensation! I guess my message had been well received .

No one can walk over you till you let them. That’s what I have learnt.

Saying no actually makes people respect you and take you seriously. Or at least think twice before asking you to do something ridiculous like take ownership and accountability for initiatives that were their responsibility in the first place.

Do you face issues in saying no? Try it once its very liberating.

Image result for saying no at work

I am not a people pleaser but if you are one and hence find it difficult to say no just be aware that there are enough people out there to take advantage of the fact that you can’t say no. To the extent that they think they are entitled to your support as in this case.

Two simple letters……N…..O……Coming together to form one simple word with immense power! NO!!

Black Goddess | Eye Shadow | Essence

Hello Glamazons!

Today I will be reviewing the Essence eye shadow in the shade ‘Black Goddess’. I have to say I love the name of this product.

I got this in my MSM Style Box. It comes in a 2.5 gm packaging and retails for Rs.199/- only.

What I love about this eye shadow straight off the bat is the packaging! Its a pressed black, shimmery, sparkly powder and has an abstract, floral print on it.

I had a tough time dipping my brush into it lest I spoil the design. The shade has a universal appeal and will flatter any skin tone.

Image result for essence black goddess review

It has a smooth, powdery finish when I swatched it. Spree.co.za describes this shadow as “This highly pigmented, shimmering hue ensures a chic start to your ensemble.” I look forward to creating smouldering eyes with this shade.

The shadow carries carries well through the day as well as the night. Being black it will go with just any wardrobe.

Essence is essentially a drugstore brand and is quite affordable nonetheless, it has good pigmentation, especially over an eye shadow primer. One criticism though, I was checking the ingredients list and I found that this product contains Parabens.

In one of my earlier blog I had written about the harmful effects of Parabens. But its so widely used that I keep wondering why.

Image result for essence black goddess review
What does it do for the cosmetic? I decided to find out and came to know that it is a very effective preservative.
Use of a preservatives, especially Parabens in a cosmetic ensures that it does not spoil. Preservatives prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mould thus protecting not only the product but also the user.
I tried this eye shadow and I have to say that it applies and blends beautifully. Perfect for those gradient looks.
It’s quite long lasting and has a beautiful silky texture. It’s not very expensive and is easy to remove or clean.

The packaging is pretty minimalistic and closes with a very satisfactory snap. This shade is a very good for beginners or people who are new to makeup.
Working with black can be quite a challenge but this shade allows for a little building up so its easy to correct mistakes. Another thing that I loved about this shadow is that there’s no fall out.
This is always a plus point for black eye shadows. Imagine the clean up!
Needless to say that the shadow works best with a primer as the color truly stands out and shines in all its glory. But even sans a primer it holds well.

This is a good eye shadow to have as part of your makeup bag and I would buy it again. And that’s my review.

Born To Be Loved | Lip Love | February,2017

Hello Glamazons!

Today we will be reviewing the So Susan Lip Love Beauty Subscription bag for February,2017. Lip Love is a beauty subscription service which ships worldwide.

The Lip Love bag  comes at a subscription fee of $20.95 (USD) per month. That works out to roughly Rs. 1,421/- only per month.

This price includes the cost of shipping. For the price of $21/- (almost) only you get 4-5 whimsically packaged products in a very pretty and whimsical makeup bag.

Lip Love is a beauty subscription bag managed by So Susan Cosmetics so they decides on your products for the month. No need to fill a preference questionnaire.

Typically the products you receive are : eye shadows, mascaras, lip gloss or a lipstick etc. This month Lip Love celebrated lovable people. (I think!)

Here are my two cents on this. Human beings are born out of love.

A man and a woman come together due to a sense of attraction seated in a place of love. They make love and a baby is born.

Literally, this baby is born out of love. I read somewhere that when babies are little, if they are not held or touched they can die.

Such is the requirement of love in a a human beings life and it starts as early as infancy. I couldn’t resist the quote below as I so agree with it.

We as human beings have an inherent need to be loved and we never outgrow it or stop wanting it.

Beautiful statement and the genesis of the themes of the Lip Love Bag in the month of February,2017 – Born To Be Loved

Lip Love has recently changed up their makeup pouches. They were doing make up bags in canvas with whimsical (almost juvenile!) prints though philosophical quotes.

This time they seemed to be targeting a more mature audience. From January I notice that they’ve changed the concept of the bag a bit.

They still do the philosophical quote what with ‘Dream Big, Dare Greatly’ last month and ‘Born To Be Loved’ this month but they have changed up the print and the material of the bag.

There’s a motif on the bag much like last month. This time its a yellow swan.

The material is a kind of thick-ish faux leather as compared to the canvas though frankly that was quite interesting! The bag itself is a white background with prints of yellow swans.

Across all of this are the words ‘Born To Be Loved.’

Have a look at the bag below:

Image result for lip love february 2017

Now lets have a look at the products I received:

  1. Lip Brush | So Susan | $18.00
Image result for lip brush so susan

I’m always happy to receive makeup brushes in subscription boxes. This lip brush is of good quality.

I can’t make out whether the bristles are synthetic or not and I am yet to use it as I tend to apply lipstick straight from the tube.

I notice that this bush has a longer handle than most and that is good as it allows for more control especially with liquid lipsticks.

2. Liquid Matte | In the shade ‘Moon Nude’| So Susan | $14.00

Image result for liquid matte lipstick so susan

I am not sure this product is going to show up on me given the color. The formula itself is good but its as if I am applying applying concealer on my lips.

I wonder if I can double it up as a concealer.

3. Sponge Bronzer | Trifle Cosmetics | $19.00

Image result for sponge bronzer

I am not big on bronzers but I believe this one is “ultra-smooth” and provides for “seamless application.” I think this would do well for contouring and a blush as well.

Here I have to say, that I find the packaging of this product a tad juvenile. All of Trifle Cosmetics products look like kids makeup or a dolls makeup rendered in plastic.

I remember having a make believe lipstick, mirror and blush which came with a doll of mine when I was little. They must seriously consider changing their packaging.

4.Supercharged| In the shade ‘Electric’  | Jelly Pong Pong | $23.00

Image result for liquid matte lipstick so susan

I love eye shadow so easily this is the most favorite product out of the bag. This product has good pigmentation and I love the shimmer too.

The advantage of this color array is that its a universal shade which will work with all skin tones. Again the problem that I have with it is the packaging.

Why is it so juvenile?! If I was to purchase this product from a store I would not purchase it due to the packaging alone!

The outer part is still okay but the eye shadow pack itself is like toy/dolls makeup. Is this product targeted at tweens?

If Trifle Cosmetics ever reads this, then please know this is the only angst I have with your products. Or let me know if I am not the target audience.

How about something a little classier, elegant and sophisticated Trifle?

Anyway, the total value of this bag totals to $86/- only. And that’s my review.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. Today I have reached the magic number of 18 followers.

Thank you if you helped me reach this number. Help me reach my new target of 25 followers please.

Dream Big Dare Greatly | Lip Love | January,2017

Hello Glamazons!

Today we will be reviewing the So Susan Lip Love Beauty Subscription bag for January,2017. Lip Love is a beauty subscription service which ships worldwide.

The Lip Love bag  comes at a subscription fee of $20.95 (USD) per month. That works out to roughly Rs. 1,421/- only per month.

This price includes the cost of shipping. For the price of $21/- (almost) only you get 4-5 whimsically packaged products in a very pretty and whimsical canvas makeup bag.

Lip Love is a beauty subscription bag managed by So Susan Cosmetics so they decides on your products for the month. No need to fill a preference questionnaire.

Typically the products you receive are : eye shadows, mascaras, lip gloss or a lipstick etc. This month Lip Love celebrated dreamers.

Here I am reminded of a quote by T.E Lawrence. It goes “All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.”

The theme of this months Lip Love bag is very related. It says Dream Big Dare Greatly which basically means that t dont limit your dreams or your imaginations.

And once you have dream it, chase the dream and make it a reality. Dare to dream care to achieve!

Even if people laugh at your dream let the, don’t deter from your path. Once the dream is achieved, you just might be the person having the last laugh!

Back to the bag now. This month Lip Love changed up their bags.

They usually do canvas bags with whimsical prints however this time, it was a plasticy, rexine material and also gone was the whimisical prints and quotes. This time they seemed to be targeting a more mature audience.

The bag itself is a lovely orange with prints f a tiger, cheetah and a zebra in white. Across all of this are oriented the words Dream Big Dare Greatly.

Have a look at the bag below.

Now lets have a loom at  products I received:

  1. Lip Pout | In the shade ‘Parrots” | Sp Susan | $18.95 | This is a pretty pink lipstick with a buttery consistency. This is So Susan’s own product and like the Lip Butters by Jelly Pong Pong, this range of lipstick also come in cases made of paper.

They also have a colorful, whimsical print and names that dont give out the shade. With a name like parrots the use is left guessing what the color could possibly be.

Green?! Have a look at the lipstick below:

2. Liptensity | In the shade ‘Intensity’| Jelly Pong Pong | $19.95 | This is a bold lip gloss that packs a good amount of shine and a lot of pigment! This formula is very creamy and moisturizing.

The shade is a gorgeous bright pink. and has a floral fragrance. Below is a pic of the lip gloss.

3. Liquid Glow | Trifle Cosmetics | $19.95 | This product is actually of no use to me nonetheless, according to Trifle cosmetics just a touch of this of this liquid luminizer is enough to give your complexion a boom of rosy brilliance.

It contains cocoa extract to hydrate the skin and make it softer. You are supposed to use your ring finger dot onto you cheekbones, brow bones and cupids bow for a boost of ethereal glow.

Have a look at the cute, whimsical packaging below.

4.Dream Pallette | In the shade ‘Midnight Ride’ | Jelly Pong Pong | $19.95 | This product is an antioxidant-rich eye shadow palette with a luxurious airy texture.

It not only moisturizes and melts onto the skin, but also makes your shadows last longer. This little eyeshadow palette is stunning!

Have a look at the pic below:

I love eyeshadow so easily this is the most favorite product out of the bag. However, I received mine broken and there’s powder all over!

I would have exchanged it but I think its expensive to send back so I’ll keep it. However, it will be nice to know how responsive Lip Love is so maybe I will write and report this.

The total value of this bag totals to $90.80/- only. I love the tag line of So Susan as a brand its:

In each of us, there is a young, suffering child. We have all had times of difficulty as children.

To protect and defend ourselves against future suffering, we often try to forget those painful times. Every time we’re in touch with the experience of suffering, we believe we can’t bear it.

We stuff our feelings and memories deep down in our unconscious mind. It may be that we haven’t dared to face this child for many decades.

This month Lip Love acknowledged that inner child. Below is a list of the products I received :

To get off the waiting list, you need to use at least 2 of your social media handles to tell the world that you are off the Ipsy Glam Bag waiting list. I think that’s a very smart social media strategy!

It ships out by the 10th of every month, you receive a tracking number with the shipment details, and can track it on every step of the way.Have a look at the gorgeous  bag.

The August,2016 theme was ‘Sugar Highness’ , the bag itself has a pretty girl who seems to be getting her make up done. She has lavender hair and mascara and lip gloss is being applied to her.

Her head band is made of an assortment of make up items. This month, there were two versions of this bag.

I got the lavendar one but there also a sea foam green version. The bag has a pretty baby pink lining.

My favorite product in this bag is the Symphony Beauty | Make up cleansing wipes | Moisturize | Cucumber and Aloe Vera

Lets dive into each of the products now:

Neapolitan Palette |Eye Shadow Palette |Jelly Pong Pong | 3 gms

If you’ve been reading my blog regularly you’d know that I love eye shadow. This is a eye shadow trio and again very safe colors.

I prefer pops of colors. It seems to be shimmery and I will be trying it out very soon.

Neopolitan pallete | Trio

Its really tiny and compact and with these three colors a lot of looks can be achieved so that good.

Tarte | Lip Surgence Lip Creme | In the shade ‘Wonder’

I don’t own anything by  Tarte so that great that I get to sample this brand. Though I have to say that the product size is very small.

If I use this regularly I might be able to use it for about three months. Its a lovely tomato red and very creamy lip crayon.

Ciate London | Paintpot | 13.5 ml| In the shade ‘Spinning Tea Cups’

I have been seeing this nail polish for forever and I am very glad I received it.I have to say a subscription bag is a great way to sample different brands in very less money.

I love the name of the shade ‘Spinning Tea Cups’ it a lovely lavender. I guess to match the bag that it came in.

Jersey Shore Sun| Mongongo |Nutrient dense anti aging lip conditioner

This is a chap stick. I usually use it over a lip liner to bring out the color.

I’ve been using the Maybelline New York Baby Lips which will get over very soon. I’ll replace this with that

The last product in my Ipsy bag is :

Symphony Beauty | Make up cleansing wipes | 10 wipes | Moisturize | Cucumber and Aloe Vera

I really liked this product and frankly speaking feel that it deserves its own review! I have been able to remove a full face of make up with it.

Foundation, lipstick, mascara eyeliner everything. Its got a lovely fragrance and the wipes themselves have a textured feel.

I will be purchasing this however in a 30 sheet pack. And that’s my review.

I hope you enjoyed reading this.Thank you for your time and remember to be kind to yourself ‘coz there’s no one like you.
