The Day I Said “No!”

It was the 08th of April, 2016!

I was chosen to be the Facilitator for a Change Management process training initiated by a vertical of my department. The head of the vertical sent a message through a colleague of mine that I would have to arrange the laptop for this training since his Mac Book would not synchronize with the projector.

I have a Chrome book so synchronizing my laptop to the projector was also out of the question. In normal circumstances, a laptop would have been requested from the Technology team and would have been used in the Boardroom.

No

These were not normal circumstances.

The International Leadership Team of my company was in town and the Board Room was requested from us for their use rendering us “roomless”.

We now had to consider and book an external venue much to everyone’s chagrin. Now at this external venue, synchronizing our laptop machines to the projector were considered a challenge.

However I had a different challenge. I was co-facilitating this training with the Head of the said vertical.

And considering it was his initiative, I couldn’t understand why the responsibility of arranging this machine fell on me. I could have understood if we were in different locations or he didn’t have a team!.

However, he was in the same location as I and had 3 team members compared to me who has none. I also had a challenge understanding why the message was conveyed to me indirectly.

Was I unapproachable? Or was this simply to establish hierarchy?!

I am always on the fence on whether I am a true millennial or not. I was born in December,1979 so this is always the confusion.

However, for the purposes of this blog let’s assume that I am a millennial. So how do millennials view hierarchy?

Image result for saying no at work

I was reading an article on this subject and it said,”While older generations view organizations in the context of hierarchy, millennials are more focused on collaborating and equality.” (http://teamstrength.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/10-Ways-Millennials-Are-Creating-The-Future-of-Work.pdf)

I frankly couldn’t agree more. We are both Vertical heads.

The vertical head in question and I. Though, he is older in age and experience to me.

Image result for saying no at work
Image courtesy | Concepts New Central

But that to me doesn’t mean a thing. I live in a country and belong to  a culture where elders are respected and revered but at the same time I don’t agree that age gives entitles you to a license to behave as you please.

And this was the space I was coming from. Why couldn’t he speak to me ,himslef  when clearly he needed my help and secondly who died and made him the boss of me?!

What gives him the right to tell me to do things for him and why does he feel hes entitled to my support? I couldn’t wrap my head around these questions.

He was clearly coming from a “command and control” mentality which I didn’t  appreciate. I didn’t arrange the laptop.

There were several reasons for it. The top most was that I didn’t want him to think that it was okay to treat me like a minion.

But from a realistic point of view this was his initiative so he must take full accountability. Why shift it onto someone else whilst he remained footloose and fancy free?

Also, I had a busy day. I am handling an important initiate of the organization which attracts a lot of attention from the senior management.

I was on that day in a meeting which was supposed to happen between my boss and the CEO the next day. My boss and I were both refining a presentation deck that we had to use for the CEO.

From 11:00 a.m to 02:25 p.m we refined the deck, followed by the meeting at 02:30 p.m. By the time we wrapped up it was 05:00 p.m. Both my boss were hungry and tired.

At such a time I came back to my desk to a screenplay of pings with underpinnings of sweet manipulations. Things like I will cover this and you can cover that.

All set for tomorrow and such inquiries. I knew that this was leading to the laptop arrangement piece and got busy with more important things.

As I was preparing to leave, he ran behind me and caught me and asked me whether the laptop had been arranged. I said no.

Image result for saying no at work

He says, I had “conveyed” that it needs to be arranged and that he didn’t know that he had to come and talk to me in person to get it down. And didn’t I get the message?

I said I got the message alright but didn’t pay much attention to it as I had my own things to do. His body language signaled that he was angry and was expecting me to do it now.

I informed him that I had an Uber waiting and had to get home. He tried to convince me but as I gave solutions to problems it was clear that I was not going to risk missing my Uber for this laptop arrangement.

He turned around and walked off in a huff. I thought this was extremely professional.

I proceeded to my Uber and was on the way home. I tend to dial in my folks at home on the way home and was deep in conversation with my dad when I saw a call coming in from him.

I ignored the first one but when it rang again I took the call. There was livid vertical head on the other side informing me that he was upset hat I had not arranged the laptop.

Image result for saying no at work

And  that he couldn’t understand why such a big deal had been made in it. To which I responded that I wasn’t aware that I was responsible for logistics when clearly he had a team.

He said his team wasn’t responsible and that it was being done at all other locations by my counterparts and hence it was expected that I do it as well. I disagreed and pointed out that they did it ‘coz his team nor he was there. What was his excuse here?

He ranted on about how uncollaborative and unsupportive I was being. And I made half hearted attempts to defend myself and let her blow steam.

Image result for saying no at work

At the end of it, he did run out of steam and hung up on me. Another portrayal of unprofessional behavior.

Mind you we are equals as far as roles are concerned. We have no reporting relationship with each other and in fact report to the same person.

The only place where there is a superiority at play is his age and experience. And I think hes the only one who thinks too much of it.

Image result for saying no at work

Having said this I must point out that I did report to him once upon a time, but now due to a strange twist of fate, we are peers. So was he stuck in a time warp where he thought that I was the same person that I was when I was reporting into him?

A lot has changed over the years, my responsibilities as well as my role.

Under him I was diminished to arranging space for training whereas today I handle one of the most important initiatives for the organization. My time is important and valuable. At that moment I was also going through a lot personally having been recently , married, moved to a new city, a new job, a horrible boss and insufferable in laws.

Image result for saying no at work

As my manager he never once inquired how things were in my personal life. And frankly I am not the types to leverage on the sympathy.

My head space was different at that time. It’s 3 and half years later now and my head space is completely different.

But perhaps hes not been able to move on or accept this change. I guess its an impression hes made about me?

Image result for saying no at work

He does seem to think he’s the cats whiskers and that everyone is below him. Anyway the next day dawned on us and I was wondering how the training will go.

I always ensure I am at the venue before time and reached 40 minutes before the scheduled time here as well. He had already set up the laptop and the sound system.

The Mac book was plugged in! I don’t know if there was remorse for his behavior from the previous evening but boy was there over compensation! I guess my message had been well received .

No one can walk over you till you let them. That’s what I have learnt.

Saying no actually makes people respect you and take you seriously. Or at least think twice before asking you to do something ridiculous like take ownership and accountability for initiatives that were their responsibility in the first place.

Do you face issues in saying no? Try it once its very liberating.

Image result for saying no at work

I am not a people pleaser but if you are one and hence find it difficult to say no just be aware that there are enough people out there to take advantage of the fact that you can’t say no. To the extent that they think they are entitled to your support as in this case.

Two simple letters……N…..O……Coming together to form one simple word with immense power! NO!!

Much Love,

French Red Clay | Clay Face Masque | Natural Bath & Body

Hello Glamazons!

Today I will be reviewing the French Red Clay, Clay face masque by Natural Bath & Body. The mask itself comes in an little, black tub.

I have the 15 gm size. This typically retails for approximately Rs.100/- only.

The website states, “Like the special clay masks that were a favorite with the egyptian goddess cleopatra, our french red clay mask never fails to soften your skin, preserve its complexion and impart a natural glow. It is a gentle paste of french red clay, which is an absolute powerhouse of iron and other minerals!”

Image result for french red clay face masque

I have used this product before I had received it as part of my first ever Fab Bag back in February,2016. This is one of my favorite face masks.

It’s best suited for normal to oily skin types, and it cleanses, detoxifies and exfoliates the skin, leaving it highly refreshed and toned. The clay is blended with rose oil, virgin coconut oil and the balancing cedar wood essential oils.

As the oils further nourish the skin, turmeric powder and sandalwood give it a distinctive radiance. Reveal your best skin from head to toe through regular use of this masque.

This face mask while safe for regular use, is recommended twice or thrice a week. It protects the skin from harmful damage caused by free radicals and pollutants in the environment.

I tend to get redness and itchiness on  my face and this masqe takes care if that very well. The masque also minimizes pores and deep cleanses.

Over time it purifies the skin to bring out your natural luster and tone.Noteworthy ingredients are:

  1. Purified water
  2. Kaolin(healing clay mud) | Perfect for oily skin
  3. Fullers Earth | Also known as ‘Multani mitti’
  4. Virgin Coconut Oil  | It’s naturally antibacterial and antifungal
  5. Gramflour | Fights pimples naturally
  6. Turmeric Powder | A natural antiseptic

You can upgrade this masks potential by:

  1. Bringing water to a gentle boil, and exposing your face to the steam.
  2. Allow 2-3 minutes for your pores to fully open.
  3. Immediately follow with mask application.
  4. Apply directly on skin avoiding any contact with the eyes
  5. Leave it on to dry for 15 minutes
  6. Wash off completely with water
Image result for french red clay face masque

While washing I found that because its clay based, its a bit slippery and slimy to wash off. I had to finally resort to a wash cloth to get it all off.

But I feel super clean!! had  blackheads on my nose and enlarged pores on my cheeks now they’re all gone!

I have a 15 gm tub tube so I don’t expect it to last that long (I apply face masks every weekend) but a little goes a long way, so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth!

I will definitely buy the full size once this when gets over and will give it 4.5 stars on a 5 star rating scale.

Hello Glamazons!

I discovered an international subscription service which doesn’t ships worldwide. Its called Birchbox.

Birchbox is ” the brainchild of two friends with a love of the internet and an itch to create a better way to shop for beauty products. Katia and Hayley envisioned a way for customers—just like themselves—to easily and efficiently try, learn about, and purchase beauty products online.”

For the price of $10/- only you get a total of 5 products in an adorable box. The products range from makeup removal, make up, hair care, and skincare,

Typically the package ships out by the 10th of every month, you receive a tracking number with the shipment details.

Have a look at the very cute box.

Below is a list of the products I received :

  1. Juice Beauty | Cleansing Milk | Full size | $22
Image result for juice beauty cleansing milk
Cleansing milk | Image courtesy fitnessmagazine.com

Thanks to a vitamin rich formula of plant based ingredients (like raspberry, aloe and grape juice) this milky face cleaner melts away makeup, hydrates and soothes irritation. It has a creamy consistency and deeply cleanses the skin.

Its well suited for normal, aging, or sensitive skin and is an excellent toner. It replenishes the skin with its botanical extracts and feeds the skin with rich nutrients of vitamins C, B5.

2. PARLOR | Jeff Chastain | Smoothing Blowout-Spray | Full size | $24

Image result for parlor smoothing blowout spray
Blowout Spray | Image couresy ebay.ca

This celeb stylist lightweight spritz adds instant volume and luster while protecting hair from heat damage.  This product is exclusive to Birchbox.

I tend to blow dry my hair on weekdays. On weekends though I can see all the damage my hair has gone through through out the work week

You’re supposed to spray this product into wet hair and let it sit for a minute or two. After this you blow dry as usual.

The results are that the hair is much softer and full of volume! That totally works for me as I have thin limp hair which needs all the volume it can get.

Since I blow dry my hair almost every day a product like this is going to quickly become a staple for me. The smell is amazing as well!

A definite must-have for anyone who blow dries their hair a lot or uses other product that provide heat damage.

3. Real Chemistry | Luminous 3-Minute Peel | Full -size | $48

Image result for real chemistry luminous 3 minute peel
Peel | Image courtesy myfairlillady.com

“Real Chemistry Luminous 3 Minute Peel removes large amounts of excess, dead epidermal cells in seconds. As the synergistic blend of ingredients is gently massaged into the skin, solids form under the fingertips. “

This product claims not to irritate the skin like regular chemical peels. It seems to be a God send for all those who expect instant gratification from their beauty products.

Once a week usage of this product is recommended.

4. Wilma Schumann Skin Care | Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads | Full – size | $18

Image result for wilma schumann collagen eye pads
Eye pads | Image courtesy makeupandbeauty.com

These pads are meant to plump, hydrate and restore while enhancing eye contour gently and naturally. Instructions from Birchbox on how to use: “After cleansing, open foil pack and immediately apply one pad beneath each eye. Apply evenly to ensure a good contact with the skin. Leave on for 20 minutes then peel and dispose.”

I am going to try these out right after I finish this blog. Will be writing a separate review about it.

So that my review on Birchbox, August,2016. They messed up my order quite a bit.

I subscribed to them in July,2016. I never received that box so I reported it.

They sent me a complimentary box instead. This is the complimentary box however it is not in keeping with the theme Birchbox has running for August,2016.

Also, they include a product card in every box. As per the card I was supposed to receive 5 products.

The 4 that I have written about and one more which was supposed to be a MAKE | Silk cream lipstick in the shade ‘Taffy’. I never received it!

I have now unsubscribed and anyway they don’t ship worldwide. I was spending a lot just to get this box imported into the country.

So good! No spending unnecessarily on boxes that don’t have good service to begin with!

Hope you enjoyed reading this review. Thank you for your time and remember to be kind to yourself ‘coz there’s no one like you.

Much Love!

Eye Feel Pretty | Fab Bag | September,2016

Eye Feel Pretty | Image coutesy beutifultalks.blogspot

Hello Glamazons!

Fab Bag usually sends out a text message or an e-mail indicating when the bag was shipped out, with tracking number details so you know to look out for it. I received my text and couldn’t hardly wait.

Towards the end of August,2016, Fab Bag sent a mail to its 3 to 6 month subscribers to choose the star product of the month. Every month Fab Bag features one star product.

Last month it was a range created by makeup artist to Hollywood stars – Geri Giagnorio. This month it was a product from Sugar cosmetics.

This month I received:

  1. Sugar Lash Mob Limitless Mascara | In the shade ‘Black With A Bang’| Full size | Rs. 699/-
  2. SaND Deadly Face Mask | 100 gms | Rs. 1,180/-
  3. AVA Face & Body Scrub| Spring Pond | 100 ml | Rs. 325/-
  4. Neemli Tulsi and Sandalwood Body Wrap | 75 ml | Rs.550/-
  5. Fashionography Accessory | Full size | Rs. 249/-
Image result for eye feel pretty fab bag
Make up bag | Image courtesy thebeautyinsideout.com

This time like last month, Fab Bag asked its 3 and 6 month subscribers to choose the bag that the goodies would arrive in.

Having watched videos of previous Fab Bags, it was evident that these were old bags. However, one of the options was also the bag for September and that’s what I chose.

The bag itself was interesting. Made of a sort of faux leather, it was a cream with black print. The print itself was different types of mascara wands.

Very much in keeping with the ‘Eye Feel Pretty’ theme. This bag gets a thumbs up from me.

I have been subscribing to them since January, 2016. My first bag was cute but thereafter I wasn’t impressed until the June and July bags arrived.

This bag too bad either, but not comparable to the June,2016 bag.

Lets explore the other products in the bag:

Sugar Lash Mob Limitless Mascara | In the shade ‘Black With A Bang’| Full size | Rs. 699/-

sugar-lash-mob-limitless-mascara-eotd

This mascara is the latest launch of Sugar Cosmetics. There was a delay in shipping because of this product and it was worth it.

I;ve always liked Sugar Cosmetics for thei moderan art like print on teh oacjaging, I jve also used their kofhl pencil and its pretty darn good. Becaus of Fab Bag I think I own almost every product of Sugr Cosmetics.

SaND Deadly Face Mask | 100 gms | Rs. 1,180/-

sf2
SaND Deadly Face Mask | Image courtesy kreativekudi.com

This is a grey-colored mud based mask which looks deadly. The product is thick like a paste .

This is a sample-sized product which will last 2-3 uses. I quite like this brand in the past I have used their handmade soap which are not only a treat for the yes but also for the skin.

They contain no preservatives and smell heavenly!

AVA Face & Body Scrub| Spring Pond | 100 ml | Rs. 325/-

As usual it had the information leaflets:

  1. the #InMyFabBag Contest card and the
  2. List of products with size and price information.

Total calculated value of the bag is Rs. 3003/- Of the lot my favorite product is the SaND Deadly Face Mask

In fact I think this product deserves its own separate review. Nonetheless, I find it to be light and nourishing to the skin.

I also thought that this month the Fab Bag over all was very user friendly.Thank you for reading.

Be kind to yourself , ‘coz there’s no one like you 🙂 Much love!

Fango Essenziali | Moisturize sheet mask

IMG_0275

Hello my Beauties!

Today I will be reviewing , The Fango Essenziali Moisturize sheet mask.  I received it in my July,2016 Glossy Box.

The mask comes in a green packet and I have one sheet mask which is 25 ml. This typically retails for $7/- (USD).

Approximately Rs.466/- only. This is the full size, sheet mask.

The website states: “……Thirsty, parched skin is refreshed and renewed with Fango Essenziali’s Moisturize sheet mask. A special cocktail of skin soothing ingredients- avocado, kelp and acai berry to hydrate, nourish and restore even the driest, most sensitive skin. ”

I can easily say that this is my new best friend. Its perfect to use alone or in between mud treatments.

A remedy for parched, dry skin. It helps to nourish and deeply moisturize.

It contains:

Avocado : To nourish and condition skin for a youthful glow.

Kelp extract : To aid in skin regeneration &rejuvenation.

Acai berry: A powerful antioxidant that’s ideal for tired skin.

Though this face mask is recommended for dry skin, its good to use on oily skin as well. After all oily skin needs moisture too!

The product is paraben free and is clinically and allergy tested. The mask intensely moisturizes and hydrates due to the blend of  avocado, kelp and acai berry.

The acai berry in it is not only a great anti oxidant but also doubles as an anti aging agent.

You can upgrade this masks potential by:

  1. Cleansing the skin
  2. Remove the white protective sheet on the mask.
  3. Place the mask on the face
  4. Remove the clear film
  5. Adjust and smooth out mask to ensure good contact
  6. Leave on for 5 to 25 minutes (As per instructions on the pack; I kept it on for 15 minutes)
  7. Remove the mask and massage excess serum into the face for maximum benefits.

So head band on, make up off lets apply this baby to the face! First things first its got an amazing fragrance.

The mask doesn’t dry off as such due to its moisture content. After I finished with the face I placed the bunched up mask on my closed lips to get rid of dry skin on my lips.

You don’t need to wash this mask of. Whatever was left in the pack I rubbed it into my neck as well.

And once I was done, it left my face smooth and refreshed.

So that’s it from me. Thank you for reading.

The Original Fango Mud Therapy | Jor’el Parker

IMG_0098
Jor’el Parker | Fango Mud Therapy

Hello my Beauties!

Today I will be reviewing (as the title suggests), The Original Fango Mud Therapy by Jor’el Parker. The mask itself comes in an orange, recyclable tube and I have the 30 ml size.

This typically retails for $10/- (USD). Approximately Rs.671/- only.

A full size 210 ml mask tube retails for $70 (USD) or Rs.4,700/- only. The website states: “Reveal your best skin from head to toe with our Fango Mud Therapy. Blended with moisturizing Sweet Almond and nourishing Avocado oils, along with rejuvenating Green Tea antioxidants and exfoliating Volcanic Ash minerals, our Fango Mud intensely hydrates, protects and deep cleanses your skin.”

This face mask which is safe enough to use on the body as well. Though it doesn’t say what skin type it suits I have a feeling it will be most suited for oily skin types, and offers anti aging and skin brightening properties. .

The product is 100% vegan and is gluten and cruelty free. It protects the skin from harmful damage caused by free radicals and pollutants in the environment.

The mask intensely moisturizes and hydrates due to the blend of the sweet almond and avocado oil. The green tea in it is not only a great anti oxidant but also doubles as an anti aging agent, while the volcanic ash gently exfoliates the skin.

The tube claims that it minimizes pores, reduces fine lines and deep cleanses. Regular use will decrease dark circles and reverse sun damage.

Over time it will purify the skin to bring out your natural luster and tone.Noteworthy ingredients are:

  1. Water (I like it when this is the first ingredient listed in a product)
  2. Kaolin, Bentonite (healing clay mud; Yup so made for oily skin)
  3. Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (organic sweet almond) oil
  4. Persea Gratissima (organic avocado) oil
  5. Gaultheria Procumbens (wintergreen) leaf extract | Tones the skin and prevents acne
  6. Anthemis Nobilis (chamomile) flower extract | Reduces skin irritants by neutralizing free radicals.
  7. Calendula Officinalis (pot marigold) flower extract | An anti-aging ingredient.

You can upgrade this masks potential by:

  1. Bringing water to a gentle boil, and (safely!) exposing your face to the steam.
  2. Allow 2-3 minutes for your pores to fully open.
  3. Immediately follow with mask application.
  4. Apply directly on skin avoiding any contact with the eyes
  5. Leave it on to dry for 15 minutes
  6. Wash off completely with water

So head band on, make up off lets apply this baby to the face! First things first its a lovely green color!

Just a teensy bit on my finger

And now that I have it on, I look like Shrek! I was thinking of including a mask selfie but don’t want to to scare people off!

The mask smells sweet its like you could almost smell the sweet almond oil and the flower extracts. It gives just a bit of a tingly feel which feels quite cooling and relaxing.

Its very easy to spread and applies evenly. Also pretty fast drying!

The mask as it dries off

As it dries, it turns to an ashy greyish-green. You can see where its working hard on clearing out the impurities.

While washing I found that because its clay based, its a bit slippery and slimy to wash off. I had to finally resort to a wash cloth to get it all off.

But I feel super clean!! And I have to say that this mud therapy mask does exactly what it says!!

I had  blackheads on my nose and enlarged pores on my cheeks now they’re all gone! I have a 30 ml tube so I don’t expect it to last that long (I apply face masks every weekend) but a little goes a long way, so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth!

I will definitely buy the full size once this when gets over and will give it 4.5 stars on a 5 star rating scale.
So that’s it from me. Thank you for reading.
