The Day I Said “No!”

It was the 08th of April, 2016!

I was chosen to be the Facilitator for a Change Management process training initiated by a vertical of my department. The head of the vertical sent a message through a colleague of mine that I would have to arrange the laptop for this training since his Mac Book would not synchronize with the projector.

I have a Chrome book so synchronizing my laptop to the projector was also out of the question. In normal circumstances, a laptop would have been requested from the Technology team and would have been used in the Boardroom.

These were not normal circumstances.

The International Leadership Team of my company was in town and the Board Room was requested from us for their use rendering us “roomless”.

We now had to consider and book an external venue much to everyone’s chagrin. Now at this external venue, synchronizing our laptop machines to the projector were considered a challenge.

However I had a different challenge. I was co-facilitating this training with the Head of the said vertical.

And considering it was his initiative, I couldn’t understand why the responsibility of arranging this machine fell on me. I could have understood if we were in different locations or he didn’t have a team!.

However, he was in the same location as I and had 3 team members compared to me who has none. I also had a challenge understanding why the message was conveyed to me indirectly.

Was I unapproachable? Or was this simply to establish hierarchy?!

I am always on the fence on whether I am a true millennial or not. I was born in December,1979 so this is always the confusion.

However, for the purposes of this blog let’s assume that I am a millennial. So how do millennials view hierarchy?

Image result for saying no at work

I was reading an article on this subject and it said,”While older generations view organizations in the context of hierarchy, millennials are more focused on collaborating and equality.” (

I frankly couldn’t agree more. We are both Vertical heads.

The vertical head in question and I. Though, he is older in age and experience to me.

Image result for saying no at work
Image courtesy | Concepts New Central

But that to me doesn’t mean a thing. I live in a country and belong to  a culture where elders are respected and revered but at the same time I don’t agree that age gives entitles you to a license to behave as you please.

And this was the space I was coming from. Why couldn’t he speak to me ,himslef  when clearly he needed my help and secondly who died and made him the boss of me?!

What gives him the right to tell me to do things for him and why does he feel hes entitled to my support? I couldn’t wrap my head around these questions.

He was clearly coming from a “command and control” mentality which I didn’t  appreciate. I didn’t arrange the laptop.

There were several reasons for it. The top most was that I didn’t want him to think that it was okay to treat me like a minion.

But from a realistic point of view this was his initiative so he must take full accountability. Why shift it onto someone else whilst he remained footloose and fancy free?

Also, I had a busy day. I am handling an important initiate of the organization which attracts a lot of attention from the senior management.

I was on that day in a meeting which was supposed to happen between my boss and the CEO the next day. My boss and I were both refining a presentation deck that we had to use for the CEO.

From 11:00 a.m to 02:25 p.m we refined the deck, followed by the meeting at 02:30 p.m. By the time we wrapped up it was 05:00 p.m. Both my boss were hungry and tired.

Image result for saying no at work

At such a time I came back to my desk to a screenplay of pings with underpinnings of sweet manipulations. Things like I will cover this and you can cover that.

All set for tomorrow and such inquiries. I knew that this was leading to the laptop arrangement piece and got busy with more important things.

As I was preparing to leave, he ran behind me and caught me and asked me whether the laptop had been arranged. I said no.

Image result for saying no at work

He says, I had “conveyed” that it needs to be arranged and that he didn’t know that he had to come and talk to me in person to get it down. And didn’t I get the message?

I said I got the message alright but didn’t pay much attention to it as I had my own things to do. His body language signaled that he was angry and was expecting me to do it now.

I informed him that I had an Uber waiting and had to get home. He tried to convince me but as I gave solutions to problems it was clear that I was not going to risk missing my Uber for this laptop arrangement.

Image result for saying no at work

He turned around and walked off in a huff. I thought this was extremely professional.

I proceeded to my Uber and was on the way home. I tend to dial in my folks at home on the way home and was deep in conversation with my dad when I saw a call coming in from him.

I ignored the first one but when it rang again I took the call. There was livid vertical head on the other side informing me that he was upset hat I had not arranged the laptop.

Image result for saying no at work

And  that he couldn’t understand why such a big deal had been made in it. To which I responded that I wasn’t aware that I was responsible for logistics when clearly he had a team.

He said his team wasn’t responsible and that it was being done at all other locations by my counterparts and hence it was expected that I do it as well. I disagreed and pointed out that they did it ‘coz his team nor he was there. What was his excuse here?

He ranted on about how uncollaborative and unsupportive I was being. And I made half hearted attempts to defend myself and let her blow steam.

Image result for saying no at work

At the end of it, he did run out of steam and hung up on me. Another portrayal of unprofessional behavior.

Mind you we are equals as far as roles are concerned. We have no reporting relationship with each other and in fact report to the same person.

The only place where there is a superiority at play is his age and experience. And I think hes the only one who thinks too much of it.

Image result for saying no at work

Having said this I must point out that I did report to him once upon a time, but now due to a strange twist of fate, we are peers. So was he stuck in a time warp where he thought that I was the same person that I was when I was reporting into him?

A lot has changed over the years, my responsibilities as well as my role.

Under him I was diminished to arranging space for training whereas today I handle one of the most important initiatives for the organization. My time is important and valuable. At that moment I was also going through a lot personally having been recently , married, moved to a new city, a new job, a horrible boss and insufferable in laws.

Image result for saying no at work

As my manager he never once inquired how things were in my personal life. And frankly I am not the types to leverage on the sympathy.

My head space was different at that time. It’s 3 and half years later now and my head space is completely different.

But perhaps hes not been able to move on or accept this change. I guess its an impression hes made about me?

Image result for saying no at work

He does seem to think he’s the cats whiskers and that everyone is below him. Anyway the next day dawned on us and I was wondering how the training will go.

I always ensure I am at the venue before time and reached 40 minutes before the scheduled time here as well. He had already set up the laptop and the sound system.

The Mac book was plugged in! I don’t know if there was remorse for his behavior from the previous evening but boy was there over compensation! I guess my message had been well received .

No one can walk over you till you let them. That’s what I have learnt.

Saying no actually makes people respect you and take you seriously. Or at least think twice before asking you to do something ridiculous like take ownership and accountability for initiatives that were their responsibility in the first place.

Do you face issues in saying no? Try it once its very liberating.

Image result for saying no at work

I am not a people pleaser but if you are one and hence find it difficult to say no just be aware that there are enough people out there to take advantage of the fact that you can’t say no. To the extent that they think they are entitled to your support as in this case.

Two simple letters……N…..O……Coming together to form one simple word with immense power! NO!!

Have Fun!

I have a habit. As I wave farewell to a person who’s going to do something specifically difficult I say “Have Fun!”

It is said with a tinge of humor laced with sarcasm but I have noticed that in one particular city in my country people tend to take it literally. They respond, “What fun? Do you think I am going to have fun?”

Image result for have fun

Of course I know you’re not going to have fun, hence the sarcasm (I don’t say this, but I should). People take themselves too seriously conversely humor is embedded in culture!

That’s the only conclusion I could come to. When cultures are serious and do not allow for easy communication to flow amongst people, there’s a lot of hierarchy in relationships, then there’s no place for humor.

Another issue I find is language. If a certain language is not your first language and you constantly have to translate from English to your native language and back to English what gets literally lost  in translation is humor and nuances like sarcasm which actually when applied appropriately could make for a very meaningful conversation. Which reminds me of a roommate I had in Canada.

Image result for Canada
Image courtesy | HCG drops direct

She was learning ESL And there was this one time when we were having a conversation and I said “Go ahead!”

Which to me or any other person who speaks the English language means please proceed with what you have thought of doing. Well ! To her, “Go Ahead!” meant something else!

She thought that I was abusing her! And took offence and lectured me in broken English that this kind of language was unacceptable to her!

Image result for unacceptable

It was only after a couple of weeks, she found out what “Go Ahead!” means and then there was a knock on my door and an apologetic roommate.

She had figured out that “Go Ahead!” was not an abuse!

Probably there wasn’t such a phrase in Japanese? For regular viewers of ‘Game Of Thrones’. I was watching the making of part of the series and apparently in Dothraki which is what the Dothraki race in ‘Game of Thrones’ speak theres no word for throne.

Image result for game of thrones

This is ironic as the show is titled ‘Game of Thrones’. There’s also no word for thank you.

As this is not part of their culture. Though Dothraki is a fictional language, do you see the connect between culture and language?

There’s also the whole bit about a lot being lost in translation. For those of you who have seen the movie you know exactly what I mean.

Here’s to better, more meaningful conversations!!

I read somewhere that empowered women, empower women. And I truly believe this.

And this is regardless of the setting whether in the workplace or the home front. An empowered housewife will empower her daughter of her daughter – in – law.

An empowered woman boss will empower her subordinate. When I look into my personal life I truly see this.

On the one hand I see my mother in law. She got married to my father – in – law at the tender age of 16.

How much do you really know about life at 16? Your husband then becomes your whole life and education takes a back seat.

But look at the repercussions in her life. All her life she has had to be dependent on her husband for everything.

Financially, emotionally every way. What would happen if he left her?

She has a son but the son too has his own life, so after the husband the son becomes the whole focus? Then what happens to the son’s life?

She has not been empowered a single day in her life. Hence she doesn’t empower me!

Not that I need her permission or her validation to be empowered! Coming from a different family, with a much higher level of education and a successful career I don’t succumb to her non empowerment.

And that’s the problem  in our relationship. The fact that I don’t succumb.

Some people might call it a generational gap! On the other hand I have my boss.

Also a woman. Shes empowered and doesn’t hold back on empowering me.

I owe a lot of my career success to her. Was it not for her, I would not get many opportunities or visibility.

This blog seems to have gone off on another tangent 😉 Coming back to this month’s Lip Love Bag.

Lip Love was doing make up bags in canvas with whimsical (almost juvenile!) prints though philosophical quotes. This time they seemed to be targeting a more mature audience.

From January I notice that they’ve changed the concept of the bag a bit. They still do the philosophical quote or statement, what with ‘Dream Big, Dare Greatly’ last month and ‘I Only Roll With Goddesses’  this month but they have changed up the print and the material of the bag.

There’s a motif on the bag much like last month. This time faces of women in pink against a white background.

The material is a kind of thick-ish faux leather as compared to the canvas though frankly that was quite interesting! Across the print are the words ‘I Only Roll With Goddesses.’

Have a look at the bag below:

Now lets have a look at the products I received:

  1. Skinsider | Highlighter Pallete |So Susan | $42.00
Image result for skinsider highlighter palette

I’m not one for highlighters but I was still very excited to receive this product!I love the packaging of it.

Its so sleek and black and slim. I also love the colors, I feel the pans are too small too dip in for highlighting and I wonder if they can be doubled up as eye shadows.

It comes with a good sized built in mirror and has its own sponge applicator. Nine beautiful, shimmery shades with awesome pigmentation.

2. Liptensity Hydrating Lip Gloss| Jelly Pong Pong | In the shade ‘Curiousity’ | $14.00

Image result for jelly pong pong liptensity

I don’t like these lip glosses at all. First off, they have a wierd detergent like smell.

Then the formula is patchy and does not apply evenly. It’s well pigmented and has good shine.

But that not enough for me.

3. Lip Pout | In the shade ‘Social Butterfly’ | So Susan | $19.00

These lipsticks are quite interesting for me. First of all the casing is made out of paper.

And then they have a whimsical print! The name of the shade also doesn’t give away the color.

4.Cheek Parfait | In the shade ‘Marmalade’ | Trifle Cosmetics | $23.00

Image result for cheek parfait

This product has good pigmentation and I love the color as well. I think the color should work for all skin tones.

Again the problem that I have with it is the packaging. Why is it so juvenile?!

If I was to purchase this product from a store I would not purchase it due to the packaging alone! The outer part is still okay but the eye shadow pack itself is like toy/dolls makeup.

Is this product targeted at tweens? If Trifle Cosmetics ever reads this, then please know this is the only angst I have with your products.

Or let me know if I am not the target audience. Anyway, the total value of this bag totals to $116/- only.

And that’s my review. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

Today I have reached the magic number of 22 followers. Thank you if you helped me reach this number.

Help me reach my new target of 25 followers please. Like, comment, share and subscribe to this blog.

Thank you for your time and remember to be kind to yourself ‘coz there’s no one like you.

French Red Clay | Clay Face Masque | Natural Bath & Body

Hello Glamazons!

Today I will be reviewing the French Red Clay, Clay face masque by Natural Bath & Body. The mask itself comes in an little, black tub.

I have the 15 gm size. This typically retails for approximately Rs.100/- only.

The website states, “Like the special clay masks that were a favorite with the egyptian goddess cleopatra, our french red clay mask never fails to soften your skin, preserve its complexion and impart a natural glow. It is a gentle paste of french red clay, which is an absolute powerhouse of iron and other minerals!”

Image result for french red clay face masque

I have used this product before I had received it as part of my first ever Fab Bag back in February,2016. This is one of my favorite face masks.

It’s best suited for normal to oily skin types, and it cleanses, detoxifies and exfoliates the skin, leaving it highly refreshed and toned. The clay is blended with rose oil, virgin coconut oil and the balancing cedar wood essential oils.

As the oils further nourish the skin, turmeric powder and sandalwood give it a distinctive radiance. Reveal your best skin from head to toe through regular use of this masque.

This face mask while safe for regular use, is recommended twice or thrice a week. It protects the skin from harmful damage caused by free radicals and pollutants in the environment.

Image result for french red clay face masque

I tend to get redness and itchiness on  my face and this masqe takes care if that very well. The masque also minimizes pores and deep cleanses.

Over time it purifies the skin to bring out your natural luster and tone.Noteworthy ingredients are:

  1. Purified water
  2. Kaolin(healing clay mud) | Perfect for oily skin
  3. Fullers Earth | Also known as ‘Multani mitti’
  4. Virgin Coconut Oil  | It’s naturally antibacterial and antifungal
  5. Gramflour | Fights pimples naturally
  6. Turmeric Powder | A natural antiseptic

You can upgrade this masks potential by:

  1. Bringing water to a gentle boil, and exposing your face to the steam.
  2. Allow 2-3 minutes for your pores to fully open.
  3. Immediately follow with mask application.
  4. Apply directly on skin avoiding any contact with the eyes
  5. Leave it on to dry for 15 minutes
  6. Wash off completely with water
Image result for french red clay face masque

While washing I found that because its clay based, its a bit slippery and slimy to wash off. I had to finally resort to a wash cloth to get it all off.

But I feel super clean!! had  blackheads on my nose and enlarged pores on my cheeks now they’re all gone!

I have a 15 gm tub tube so I don’t expect it to last that long (I apply face masks every weekend) but a little goes a long way, so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth!

I will definitely buy the full size once this when gets over and will give it 4.5 stars on a 5 star rating scale.

Black Goddess | Eye Shadow | Essence

Hello Glamazons!

Today I will be reviewing the Essence eye shadow in the shade ‘Black Goddess’. I have to say I love the name of this product.

I got this in my MSM Style Box. It comes in a 2.5 gm packaging and retails for Rs.199/- only.

What I love about this eye shadow straight off the bat is the packaging! Its a pressed black, shimmery, sparkly powder and has an abstract, floral print on it.

I had a tough time dipping my brush into it lest I spoil the design. The shade has a universal appeal and will flatter any skin tone.

Image result for essence black goddess review

It has a smooth, powdery finish when I swatched it. describes this shadow as “This highly pigmented, shimmering hue ensures a chic start to your ensemble.” I look forward to creating smouldering eyes with this shade.

The shadow carries carries well through the day as well as the night. Being black it will go with just any wardrobe.

Essence is essentially a drugstore brand and is quite affordable nonetheless, it has good pigmentation, especially over an eye shadow primer. One criticism though, I was checking the ingredients list and I found that this product contains Parabens.

In one of my earlier blog I had written about the harmful effects of Parabens. But its so widely used that I keep wondering why.

Image result for essence black goddess review
What does it do for the cosmetic? I decided to find out and came to know that it is a very effective preservative.
Use of a preservatives, especially Parabens in a cosmetic ensures that it does not spoil. Preservatives prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mould thus protecting not only the product but also the user.
I tried this eye shadow and I have to say that it applies and blends beautifully. Perfect for those gradient looks.
It’s quite long lasting and has a beautiful silky texture. It’s not very expensive and is easy to remove or clean.
Image result for essence black goddess
The packaging is pretty minimalistic and closes with a very satisfactory snap. This shade is a very good for beginners or people who are new to makeup.
Working with black can be quite a challenge but this shade allows for a little building up so its easy to correct mistakes. Another thing that I loved about this shadow is that there’s no fall out.
This is always a plus point for black eye shadows. Imagine the clean up!
Needless to say that the shadow works best with a primer as the color truly stands out and shines in all its glory. But even sans a primer it holds well.

This is a good eye shadow to have as part of your makeup bag and I would buy it again. And that’s my review.

Natural Bath & Body | Rose & Mint Hand Souffle

Hello Glamazons!

Today I will be reviewing, the Natural Bath & Body Co.s Rose and Mint Hand Souffle. I received it in my March, 2017 MSM Style Box.

I have the 50 gm tub which  retails for Rs.275/- only. “For the daily rigor that our hands go through they deserve the advanced treatment that Natural Bath & Body stimulating cream provides.

Enriched with fusion of organic and natural butters that protects and deeply hydrates the skin. It has a Soothing scent of freshly plucked Rose petals and a hint of garden Mint is pure decadence.” (

Let me start with the scent. It reminded me of a face mask of a cheap beauty parlor.

Frankly, I was expecting something a little more exotic. Though I have to say I love the color and texture of this product.

The packaging could be a little more “rose-y”. They have been stingy with the roses.

Image result for red roses

This product also claims to be an effective, heavy hand cream/souffle (explains the light texture) that softens dry skin, chapped cuticles and callused heels. Its enriched with the goodness of rose petals and fresh mint.

Its summers here now and I have been using a lot of this cream and I have found that it not only protects the skin from dryness, but also nourishes and deeply hydrates the skin. This product is also paraben free.

I was looking up parabens and their effects on the skin and here’s some information. Parabens can cause allergic reactions and breast cancer.

Image result for red rose petals

I was reading up a bit about this brand and came to know that Natural Bath & Body makes a wide range of unique organic skin care, bath and body products. Their products are manufactured using only “natural essential oils and botanical extracts and are a perfect blend of ancient Ayurvedic concepts, modern technology and creativity.

All their products are made with high quality, exotic ingredients, superior hygiene standards and are absolutely safe to use.”

How to use Rose& Mint Hand Souffle :

  1. Smooth over hands after washing. Use as often as required.
